- Muriel Beckett has been fascinated with the process of hand weaving since discovering the craft while a student at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art and Design and at The National College of Art and Design in Dublin.
The Irish Export Board awarded Muriel a scholarship to Finland to complete her training. The simple clean lines inherent in Scandinavian design proved to be a strong influence. Other sources of inspiration include Japanese traditional and contemporary design, kilims and oriental rugs. Living close to the sea and the mountains in Co. Wicklow has also had a strong influence on Muriel’s’ current use of colour, pattern and texture.
Muriel Beckett specialises in individual colourful wall hangings and floor rugs which are made to commission or for selected exhibitions. Her pieces have sold all over the world, from Japan, to Bahrain to Lesotho and to America. Muriel has wide experience of the commissioning process both for corporate clients and for individuals.
